How many calories do celebrities eat?

March 5, 2007 by Wendy Boswell

Well, here’s a few celebrity calorie counters for you:

Kirstie Alley revealed how at her heaviest she demolished up to an astonishing 28,000 calories a day.Kirstie now eats healthily — around 1,500-2,000 calories a day.

RENEE ZELLWEGER: for both Bridget Jones films Renee consumed 4,780 calories a day for three months, eating 20 doughnuts a day, battered beef, fast-food burgers, chips and shakes as well as pizza and peanut butter.

After the first film, she embarked on the Atkins diet. Now the 5ft 5in star maintains her 7st figure on tuna, cold meats, dressing-free salads and raw vegetables.

Two poached eggs: 148 cal.
One banana: 95 cal.
One tuna steak: 180cal.
Two portions dressing-free mixed salad: 100 cal.
100g cured thinly sliced beef: 160 cal.
One portion raw vegetables: 90 cal.
Total: 773 CAL.

KATE WINSLET: Having weighed more than 13st at school, she earned the nickname Blubber and was mercilessly teased. In 1992, she realised she was being cast for her size and lost 3st inside 12 months, leaving her a healthy 10st.

But two years later she convinced herself the industry would grant her entry only if she was skinny. She existed on only an apple a day and her weight plummeted to 7st 10lb.

In 2003, while pregnant with her second child, Joe, she gained nearly 4st. She lost this following an Oriental face-reading diet — where an analysis of skin, hair and eyes determined the best way for Kate to shed the pounds. Kate ate no red meat or milk, instead filling herself on chicken, potatoes, salad and butter.

One tuna salad: 386 cal.
One portion roast chicken: 255 cal.
One large baked potato: 176 cal.
One tbspn butter: 102 cal.
Total: 919 cal.

LIZ HURLEY: In the past, Liz has admitted to ‘eating very little breakfast, not too much more lunch. Then tiny little snacks in the day, such as a banana or six raisins. The only meal I have is dinner’.

Dinner consisted of a combination of brown rice, oatcakes and steamed fish. She also takes regular pilates classes which burn around 300 calories per session.

One banana: 95 cal.
Six raisins: 10 cal.
One 100g serving brown rice: 111 cal.
One oatcake: 48 cal.
One portion steamed cod: 90 cal.
One portion steamed haddock: 95 cal.
Total: 449 cal.

GWYNETH PALTROW: Mother-of-two Gwyneth has followed a macrobiotic diet for years. Recently she adopted a diet prescribed by celebrity health guru Dr Joshi.

As well as dairy, red meat and alcohol, she is banned from eating wheat, tomatoes, peppers, fruit, sugar and gluten. Typically she eats celery sticks for breakfast, lentil soup for lunch and salmon with brown rice for dinner.

One portion celery sticks: 10 cal.
One portion lentil soup: 150 cal.
One portion grilled salmon: 127cal.
One 200g portion cooked brown rice: 216 cal.
Total: 503 cal.

KELLY OSBOURNE: After dinner with Sir Elton John in 2003, Kelly suffered severe food poisoning. She vowed never to eat a piece of fish again — sticking to cheeseburgers, hot dogs and chips. Besides, she recently told Teen Vogue: ‘Skinny celebrities look beautiful in photographs, but when you see them in person they look hungry.’

One bacon double cheeseburger with relish: 708 cal.
One portion large French fries: 570 cal.
One vanilla milkshake: 211 cal.
One hotdog in white bun: 242 cal.
One portion fried onions: 180 cal.
One large Coca Cola: 255 cal.
Total: 2,166 cal.

CLAUDIA SCHIFFER: For supermodel and mother-of-two Claudia, a ‘no breakfast’ rule works best. She says: ‘I eat nothing but fruit and vegetables before noon.’ When she does eat, her diet consists of grilled chicken salad and water for lunch and a dinner of steamed fish, steamed vegetables and water(she does not drink alcohol).

One apple: 47 cal.
One orange: 37cal.
One 100g serving grapes: 60 cal.
One portion grilled chicken breast with no skin: 215 cal.
One serving mixed salad (no dressing): 50 cal.
One portion steamed cod: 90cal.
One serving steamed vegetables: 38 cal.
Water: 0 cal.
Total: 537 cal.

VICTORIA BECKHAM: Before the birth of her third child Cruz, Mrs Beckham was on the strawberry diet. She ate a bowl of strawberries for breakfast and little else for the rest of the day, except for litres of mineral water.

With such strict calorific intake, she maintained her 23in waist — the same measurement as a seven-year-old child’s. Victoria upped her eating when she fell pregnant, but five weeks after Cruz was born her flat tummy was back. She said it was down to ’sensible eating’ and sticking to solely Spanish food.

Victoria reportedly ate lots of paella, olives and omelettes to shed the baby bump.

152g of strawberries: 49 cal.
One portion paella: 320 cal.
One 200g portion cooked brown rice: 216 cal.
One 8g portion olives: 10 cal.
Total: 595 cal.

  1. Mel S. says:

I’m with the last person who commented. Six raisins? Who counts? If Raisin Bran gave you six raisins per bowl, they’d be getting a lot of complaints!

It is sad to think that all of these celebrities are trying this hard. Their whole lives must be consumed by how they look every second. I bet half of them purge if they eat a grape for the fear that it might bulge out their 25-inch bellies. Ridiculous! I say: We’ve got about 10,000 taste buds. Let’s enjoy them :)

  2. Jane says:

This confuses me. Was this a real interview, or just a load? Because really, who survives on that? I thought your body went into a type of ’starvation’ mode.

It must be horrible to be hungry 24-7.

  3. Amarieh says:

Yes, that is a very low amount of calories, but when I had to loose weight, I was put on basically the same diet as Gweneth, no more than 500 cals per day, and I was drinking 2 liters of water a day, I lost 75 pounds in a year, (went from 225 at age 18 to 150) and 5 years later, at 122, I am still pretty much faithful to it. I guess you don’t want to quit due to guilt, good results, and habit.

  4. Gloria says:

wow. I really feel sorry for these women. I maintain 100 pounds on three TIMES what Liz eats daily. pity.

  5. Yvette says:

The average person burns 2000 calories each day! No wonder models start fainting when the photo shoots last too long! I’m always struggling with my weight and would love to be able to limit myself to just 1500 calores each day! And that’s without exercise!

  6. Anonymous says:

This is ridiculous. First of all, if you really consumed this little each day, your body would start eating away at muscle. This is impossible to maintain for long periods of time. I am 115 pounds, and am considered extremely fit, and I eat about 1700-1800 calories a day. Considering that your BMR is likely around 1100/1200 (this is a resting state, does NOT include how much you burn with exercise and daily activity!) There is no reason why celebrities should be eating this little, considering that they work out alot. This is sad. Also, not healthy. Not nearly enough vitamins and minerals in this diet…kind of scares me. I really hope no one reads this and starts following this kind of diet because that would really be difficult and unhealthy to maintain…

  7. tria says:

Bless these women, i will do anything to stop eating the way i do write now, i cant stop eating and it is distroying my life for over five years now i eat on average 3500cal. a day am now 30kg over weight it beter to be under weight and healthy than be over weight.

  8. dee says:

all of these diets will damage your metabolism and they have low protien, so in turn your hair will fall out your nails teeth and bones are a mess and when your eating habits return to normal your metabo is so messed up you gain more than what u lost and it becomes harder to lose cause your body thinks food is scarce and stores fat. so eat organic food every two hours count chemicals in your food not calories and only eat simple food like brown rice beans veggies fruit and fish and chicken and jog ten to fifteen minutes twice a week and you will be good i promise

  9. Mackie says:

These seem like very unhealthy diets — their muscle must be non-existent, and after a while, wouldn’t this start to take a toll on their brain function, skin texture, teeth, nails, and bones… not to mention mental health. I mean, sure you’re thin and beautiful in your 20s and early 30s, but once it starts catching up to them their looks will go faster than someone who’s not been depriving themselves that way.

  10. Caty says:

It seems as though these women torture their bodies to please the eyes of their viewers. It’s not healthy to eat such a small amout of calories a day unless under the supervision of a licensed dietition. This is really beacuse a person needs a certain amount of calories to survive in one day (even if you’re bed-ridden, your body still needs energy to power your heart). We can’t starve ourselves to please other people- it’s better to live healthily and enjoy life. It’s really not worth it.

  11. Val says:

This can’t be true! From personal experience each time I do a daily cal deficit that’s greater than 700, my body immediately starts to store fat and shed muscle at the 3rd day, which means you get bigger because fat takes up more space. These women must be doing at least a 1000 cal deficit which would mean they probably have no muscle at all (which seems pretty impossible given the fact they are so thin). This is only possible if their metabolism is so screwed up (maybe that’s the reason with such a shitty diet), the sad thing is that they will probably never be able to eat like a normal person because their bodies are use to it.
Please don’t do this! You’ll regret it so much!

  12. Connie says:

I think the truth is that female celebs just don’t exercise as often as they say they do. Most of them are thin because they don’t eat — simple as that. When they say they run every morning and do pilates four times a week, they’re LYING. They probably put in an hour at the gym two or three times a week.

I firmly believe that you can eat three good meals and two snacks a day and still be thin, as long as you exercise regularly and don’t eat a lot of crap. But I also firmly believe that celebrities are MUCH thinner than the “average” healthy woman, and I think that’s entirely due to living on 1200-1400 calories a day.

  13. Amy says:

I work at a clinic for women with eating disorders, and this makes me soooo sad. It’s no wonder that some of our ladies are near death and will face a life-long struggle with their ED when this is the role model we’ve set American Women to look up to. I hope this is exaggerated.

  14. Charlotte says:

I think that these woman are making other woman feel bad about there own body image because in all magazines its diet this, how to loose weight in 2 weeks to look like these apparant role model. I’m a healthy person who works out 4 times a week but still feels fat because of my body image!! women aren’t perfect but its the next generation of girls that are going to effected even more than us with 7 year old girls saying i look fat in this how much worse will it get ………sad but true.

  15. betty says:

I read that Posh spice had what’s called a “Mummy tuck” after her pregnancy- apparently a very dangerous procedure (possibly banned in N. America)

  16. Deepanjali says:

This is too low and honestly speaking, I think its all crap. this information is misleading. M sure they eat more and they look good coz their have strict diets and good fitness plans.
    :)

  17. Sharie says:

yeah you keep thinking that Deepanjali if it makes you feel better. You can survive on this amount of food - people with Eating Disorders do everyday. And that’s what these women are - people with eating disorders. You may not want to believe that someone would go to these extremes to stay thin but if they aren’t thin and “perfect” they don’t make the paychecks that keep them comfortable and keep audiences happy. I think anyone else would react the same way with that kind of pressure. So get over yourselves.

  18. Lucy says:

I find all of this very sad, that people dedicate their lives to eating very little and having little boney figures. But i myself have fallen prisoner to the 500 calories per day diet. I feel perfectly well, after 3 weeks, but i am too scared to stop, too scared of what will happen to my health.

  19. Deepanjali says:

Well if you are doing that, then its extremely unhealthy!
I am 5′3″ and weigh only 106 lbs
    I eat 1500-1600 calories a day and workout 4 days a week.
And as a matter of fact I also soemwhat look skinny, cutting out calories is not the only way to keep skinny.
plus these celebrities do intensive training to look that way!

  20. Katzi says:

I am 5 6 weigh 118 and i still have love handles and a double chin. I am a vegan and eat 500 cals a day. If i cut my six day a week (2 hrs a day) to 3 days a week for 45 minutes. Will i still lose weight or maintain it?

  21. Deepanjali says:

First of all your weight is perfect for your hieght.
Try and eat 1600 calories a day and do 4 days a week 30 mins cardio and 30 mins strength training.
You will always be in a perfect shape.

  22. Stacy says:

wowowow i think yo need a news flash
70% of celebs use cocaine to maintain their weight.
do you really think the majority of A list celebs have the time to work out?. NO its to cover up why they have a perfect body. No one can be so thin the way they are and have no muscle tone. And yes Jessica Alba does cocaine. You should compare celebrities with cocaine noses (LINDSAY LOHAN) and then look at other’s noses on a less intense scale. (ISN’T A BIT ODD HOW THE MAGORITY OF CELEBS SORTA HAVE THE SAME NOSE?…IS THERE SOME CELEBRITY COUNTRY OR SOMETHING?) Here’s a fun one to start with okay? JULIA ROBERTS i promise you despite her good reputation she uses cocaine. Most celebrities never get revealed that they use because they are smart about it and they have amazing agents..cOUGH COUGH…DINA LOHAN (COCAINE ADDICT, LINDSAYS MOTHER) IS LINDSAYS AGENT. :]
ALSO ISNT JUST STRANGE HOW CELEBS AGE SO QUICK?

AND WHY WOULD SOMEOE AT 30-40 NEED BOTOX?
MY MOTHER IS 56 AND SHE IS BARELY JUST GETTING HER RIINKLES

I WOULD KNOW MY FATHER IS APART OF THE SCREEN ACTORS GUILD. HE HAS WORKED WITH VARIOUS CELEBS (MOSTLY SOAP OPERAS ON ABC) BUT HAS WWORKED WITH MANY IN THE PAST

  23. Claire says:

OKAY SRY NO BODY EATS SO LITTLE. Those stars would be constantly loosing weight if they only ate 600 calories a day… seriously I have a 23 inch waist and i weigh 95 pounds but i eat at least 1800 calories a day to maintain my weight. honestly. A normal human being burns 1500 calories doing NOTHING.

  24. Idgie says:

Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is based on age, gender, current weight and acitivity level. Obviously, this is going to differ a bit person to person. The BMR is how many calories your body burns doing nothing at all. It doesn’t count getting out of bed and even walking to the bathroom.

Eating less than the BMR causes weight loss. Eating around the same, maintenance, and more, weight gain.

These 500-1000 calorie diets reportedly used by the above celebrities are obviously very low. Too low for maintenance. Someone very small might have a pretty low BMR, however. Example, a woman with low activity level at 63 inches tall and 130 pounds has a BMR of 1380.

If you use the BMR as your guide, you can see where someone with a low BMR would indeed have to consume a fairly low number of calories if they wanted to lose or even maintain weight.

That said, 500 is wayyy too low, and they never recommend going below 1200 because of nutrient deficiencies.

Better, I think is to look at your BMR, then cut about 250 calories from it, make up the rest in exercise for a goal of 500 calories cut from the diet.

But once you’ve hit your goal weight, you should again use the BMR chart to figure out what the maintenance calorie rate needs to be.

  25. Mary says:

I am sorry but this is a load of crap. Sure they’ve all probably eaten like this every once in a while, but if they ate like this all the time, they’d be way thinner. Believe me, I have an eating disorder and eat around 500 calories a day give or take. You will CONTINUE to lose weight if you continue to eat like this. Maybe they went on a crash diet after a pregnancy or something, but if they ate like this every day, they’d be skeletal and sickly looking to the point that you would KNOW by looking at them that they had a disorder.
I’m very well educated on this subject as I’ve had anorexia for 5 years and also know many other girls who suffer from it.
And no, it is not something you want. It is not glamorous. That is why this article ticks me off so much. It’s making eating disorders look like “the thing to do” and glamorizing a disease that has stricken me with so much pain and has stolen my life from me.
I’m sorry but it takes one to know one, and the only one on this list that I believe truly eats the way that the article say she does is Victoria Beckham.

  26. Heather says:

I believe this article. A few years back I got crazy skinny by living off of 500-800 calories a day. I didn’t do it on purpose I just lost my appetite and barely ate. I also walked or jogged every day and did pilates 3x/week. Not sure if I lost muscle but I must have because I wasn’t weight training. The only reason I gained weight was because I started binge eating on nuts and cheese after finding out I couldn’t eat sugar, dairy or wheat anymore. I don’t understand how some women say they maintain 100lb bodies eating 1500 calories a day or more? Maybe that’s not the norm and for celebrities to be really skinny they have to go to extremes like I did. That was the skinniest I have ever been and will probably ever be.

  27. kelley says:

500 calories a day is not that “little” as you all keep saying. and no people who eat around that much per day are not hungry all day! that’s stupid. some people only need a banana to feel full for hours. If you aren’t stuffing yourself with fried foods and meats and you only drink water, you can easily eat 500 calories a day.

  28. kelley says:

500 calories of food can be A LOT of food OR it can be a very little amount of food depending on what it is. I can eat a HUGE salad with lots of veggies on it and a HUGE smoothie for less than 500 OR I can eat a couple bites of bread, steak, and potato.

    Raw Vegan! Woot Woot lol

  29. kelley says:

Oh and I would also like to add…

A weekly meal plan would give a better idea of how someone eats. because obviously no skinny person eats a load of fattening foods every day but maybe 2 or 3 days a week they would eat nuts and/or avocado which are very fatty. This would balance out those days when they only ate say… banana and raisins. haha

  30. Lana says:

That’s BULL! They’d all be dead by now if they ate that little everyday.

  31. Lana says:

Oh and Kirstie used to eat 28000 calories a day? Not even obese people eat that much. It’s not physically possible. Maybe 10000, but not more than that.

  32. Dawn says:

As a formerly heavy woman who has had bariatric surgery, I can relate to some of what everyone has said. I’m 5′3 and weigh about 128 pounds. After some illness and a break up with a boyfriend, I barely eat. There are days I eat nothing and if I eat 800 calories,I panic. The fear of being overweight consumes me every minute of every day! Every bite I put in my mouth even if it’s something basically calorie free like lettuce scares me. Eating is torture and I hate to eat in front of people. Eating this little is not fun, it’s a horrible cycle that causes you not to be able to tolerate a healthy amount of food. These air brushed, nip tucked celebrities are to blame for people like me who are literally terrified to eat-that’s what society as a whole-especially men think we should all look like. I wouldn’t wish my situation on anyone and would urge all women to try to be healthy and not be a slave to the scale or mirror….or a man!

  33. idiots says:

if you dont understand how nutrition works dont say anything.i eat 500 calories a day and guess what.i wake up at 7 am and take a 3 mile walk 7 days a week and then i do cardio X from 3:20 to 4 and i drink 3 quarts of water a day.my hair and bones and blood sugar are good after 11 years of this and i spend 20 dollars a month on cheese fruits and yogurt.dieting is easy!

  34. deepanjali says:

    Damn!
How do u live on 500 calories.
My breakfast alone is that much, I try to eat 1400 cals everyday to maintain my weight with 4 days a week workout.
My skin and hair is excellent
Its tough but better than being anorexic :-)

  35. KSun says:

You guys!! Avacados are “the fat that make you not fat”!! Seriously, eat one a day and I promise you will feel like you’re splurging but you’re not! And they’re yummy!!

  36. Megan says:

Ok I started doing the 500 cal a day diet 2 monthes ago. I’m completely healthy. No hair loss, no dizziness, nothing! Well, except for the fact I’ve lost 24 pounds :) and I’m not always hungry. It depends on what u eat!

  37. Mimi says:

I have been on the 500 calorie diet too…its not as hard as I thought…I have found that if you prepare your food in advance you have at your need low cal foods…also keeping a journal of what you eat. noting the cals in whatever food it was…I also have a list of all low cal or no cal foods and its not hard at all ..I find that when I play kick ball or run with my kids…I have a good time and I get exercise. I would say to all that want to loose weight to find foods you like and make a plan of 500 cals a day and incorporating foods you like in portions…and If thats hard …try eating one 500 cal mealing for the whole day.

  38. Mimi says:

by one 500 cal meal for the whole day I mean sort on meal into 3 ..200 cals is the mean and 300 for snacks ..an apple and orange ..cashews…

  39. rachel says:

if you only eat 500kcals a day (and it is possible to live on without loosing any weight after a while) then your body becomes used to only living off 500kcals a day and wont get hungry. The more you eat, the more you stretch your stomach, the more hungry you become. It works in reverse aswell.
Less you eat< stomach shrinks< you feel fuller on less.

ALSO this hasn’t been mentioned once, i find it amazing.
For people who are 98lbs and can still eat 1800-2000kcals a day, it’s all in their metabolism. Everyones metabolism is different. Your lucky if you can eat whatever you want and not gain, use it while your young, it doesn’t last forever. And like mine, i have a slow metabolism, if i ate 1800kcals a day i’d gain lbs every 2 days. just to clear up.

  1. [...] A shocking article that appeared on Snarky about “How many calories do celebrities eat?” was not as shocking to me as it was to those that commented.  Is the price of fame worth the headache?  Examples: Super model Claudia Schiffer revealed that the day of the news interview she had only consumed 537 calories.  Well Claudia, put me on the F-List as I consume that many calories a day just drinking water, Yeah, flavored water. Even Liz Hurley went on the say that she only had one banana and six raisins for breakfast.  And my reply to that is one banana on my cereal and at least six raisins on every spoonful is my breakfast of champions.
