The Duggar Family is expecting their 18th child

by Wendy on May 10th, 2008

Happy Mother’s Day, indeed. The always expanding Duggar Family is now expecting their 18th child. Right now, she’s about six weeks along and everything seems to be going well; the last baby they had is only 9 months old. So, obviously, in their highly regimented home of automatons, there is a block of time scheduled for “getting bizzay.”

I have mixed feelings about all these kids. Personally, if I could afford that many kids and WANTED that many kids, I would adopt. There are too many needy children out there that need a home that’s obviously loving and caring out to grab every television appearance like this one. I think it’s irresponsible and selfish to pop out that many kids rather than take in the ones that really need help. Plus, HELLOOOO??!?!? Her uterus must look like a freaking mud puddle at this point - JimBob is pretty much just throwing a hotdog down a hallway. Gross.

But that’s just my opinion - what do you think?

Well, I would take issue with the “obviously loving and caring” assumption. Announcing your 18th pregnancy to your family ON THE TODAY SHOW (link) says nothing good about their priorities.

I’ll reserve judgment for another ten or twenty years. Let’s see how these kids turn out.

Oh, wait! I’ve already passed judgment on them back at my place. But that’s just snark :)

like driving a tractor into the Grand Canyon. Why not adopt some of the half million kids in foster care instead of this baby making factory business the Duggar’s seem to be in.

Sickens me to the core. These people are using religion as a platform to spout out more babies than they can possibly take care of. The older kids are strapped with child-rearing duties. It’s selfish, irresponsible and attention-seeking. If they really wanted to help society, they’d take in some unwanted kids (how about the FLDS kids from that cult ranch?). I hope Michelle goes into menopause and Jim Bob gets a bad case of impotence.

I live in Tontitown, Arkansas where this family is from. Their selfishness is appalling. This family receives quite the amount of “donations” to live. Not to mention that they recently applied for their 7,000 sq. ft. home to be a church for tax-exempt status!

There ya go, Ladies and Gentlemen: way to have 18 children and find ways NOT to support them on your own!

Large families are great- if you lived in the 1800’s and owned farmland! God said go forth and multiply… he did NOT say go forth and create a small city and then leave the inhabitants to fend for themselves.

I think we need some divine intervention!

@Regina - can you give us proof of that?

    And more gossip? :>)

    STOP HAVING CHILDREN!!!!

I know that their application received headlines locally. However, I doubt that they were actually approved and cannot find evidence that they were (which still remains a question to many, not just myself). I do know that http://www.ar-tax.org will tell you that their personal property taxes in 2007 were $133 on their 7,000 sq ft home on 20 acres. Dunno about you, but that’s tax-exempt enough for me! :)

As far as more gossip, I don’t know them personally (I try to stay away from the extremists, myself). I just know that I’ve grown up hearing about this family and they have used this media attention to its fullest to pop out more kids. It churns my stomach.

I’m happy to say that at least they aren’t drug mongers or street walkers. Even still, it reeks of House on the Prairie on steroids to me.

I think it’s unsettling that the publicity this family gets via the media is only positive. No one ever questions them about their tax exempt status or how little taxes they actually pay. No one asks the obvious question as to why they feel the need to spout out more and more kids when there are foster kids who need homes and if they just loved children, they’d be taking in those kids instead.

No interviewer has asked them how it might seem selfish to make your older kids raise the younger ones. No teenager should have to babysit their toddler brother/sister all the time simply because Mom or Dad don’t have the time to do it. When
there is a sign-up sheet to have one-on-one time with a parent, that says that this family cannot manage that many children. There is just not enough parenting to go around and that really short-changes the kids.

This family offers society nothing. Sure, one of those kids could wind up finding a cure for cancer, but just because the kids might all turn out to be decent people is no reason to keep having more and more of them.

I am torn. I completely agree w.many of your thoughts. I believe that their sexist household is frightening. Women scrubbing floors, while the menfolk handle “real work” — Oy.

But for me, I really wonder how much one human body can take. Reallly, does her OB think the average woman can birth 18 children?

However, I respect that there is something frighteningly peaceful about them. They know they are mocked by today’s society, somewhat, and they don’t care. They truly believe in the life they’ve chosen, and they live it well.
    So, I suppose it’s a to-each-their-own, type thought.
I have to confess, I can’t wait to see their show on DiscoveryHealth, because it looks like a series, long-term, not just one show.

I can’t find previews online, but I did see these:

I’m sure Michelle wouldn’t have anything good to say about 2 lesbian women who are both pregnant. I’m pretty open-minded about things like this, but I will admit that I didn’t think this couple looked like lesbians until they said they were. I actually wasn’t sure if they were sisters or neighbors or what until it was obvious. I also think they both look a bit old to be having babies. Just my 2 cents. I think having kids well into your 40’s is not a chic thing to do. It’s especially not cool when you already have 17 previous kids like the Duggar clan.

I think a lot of people who think multiple births or many children is a good thing aren’t thinking about the horrendous costs of raising a child. Better to have one or two and be able to function without scrapping by than having more than you can reasonably afford. My parents felt that way and so do I.

It’s beyond appalling. Anyone who has the resources to have that many children should be adopting. In a world where our natural resouces are limited and our environment is impacted enough already, it is selfish and reckless.

    May 21, 2008 at 09:36

The Duggars are a very loving family. They love their children, they are well behaved, not on welfare, and it’s their business they want to have as many children God is wants them to have. How are they being selfish? They are taking care of their children. God Bless them all.

  • Mitsy
    May 21, 2008 at 12:36

Jfab is another starry eyed Duggar groupie. Amazes me how many people seem to worship this family and think they should be put on the Christian platform of “what a Christian looks like”.

A true Christian doesn’t foolishly shelve their brains in the name of religion. They don’t take scriptures and twist them to mean things they don’t or try to make others look less Christian because they don’t believe their twisted logic on the Bible’s interpretation. I think the Duggar’s are the most extreme form of excess. It means nothing to me that they are debt free if they continue to spout out more babies. They have blinders on if they think they are doing their older kids a favor by forcing them to raise their younger siblings. The Duggars are not contributing to the world, they are taking from it by continuing to have more babies than they can possibly take care of (without a lot of help from other people). I pray for menopause for Michelle.

what’s sad is that a big part of the reason WHY the Duggars (and those like them) are having so many kids is to rid the world of people with names like the previous commentor.

No, what’s really sad are people like Rain who buy into the Duggar’s delusional belief system. Their mentality is a lot like the Bible thumpers who always believe that “God will take care” of them…the same ones who believe that God will provide but refuse to look for work. It’s the same foolish mind-set, only sadly, it’s with kids’ futures at stake. The Duggars are selfish, irresponsible, and pathetic.

    May 26, 2008 at 21:11

Whoa, Mitsy . . . sounds like I need to clarify my position . . . I’m not sure how you thought that I was “buying into their delusional belief system”.

The short version–I was trying to point out that the person who posted immediately before me was wishing this family well, when the reality is that the movement that the Duggars belong to exists in large part to rid the world of people with middle names like “Ali” and “Hussein”. This is the OPPOSITE of my own views, which is why I said that it was “sad”.

The point I was trying to make with the above link was that people who follow the “quiverfull” movement are concerned that the world population of white people is decreasing. I am not in any way seeking to defend this family, or this movement. It is true that I am a Jesus follower, but I am quite sure that my interpretation of what that means is QUITE different than that of the Duggars and others who espouse the “quiverfull” movement. A quick search of my own blog will, I am fairly certain, confirm this.

(I get a lot of flack from people for the things I’ve said about this family on my blog. I’ve been accused outright of not being a “true Christian”. I don’t suppress opposing viewpoints on my blog, but neither do I renege on my position concerning this.)

I hope this makes sense. As much flack as I get for being “anti-Duggar”, I sure as heck don’t want to be identified as “PRO-Duggar”!

OK, I guess it was really the previous poster (not Rain) that my post was intended for. I didn’t read it correctly..Sorry about that.

The Duggar’s are worse than the Mennonite and Amish faiths as far as their lack of birth control beliefs. At least the Mennonites and Amish don’t have an agenda like the Duggar’s do. The fact that he ran for congress also adds to why I dislike these people. He used his family to get votes. Thankfully, the last time it didn’t work because he wasn’t re-elected. Jim Bob and Michelle are not using common sense and common sense is the very basic quality that most people expect from people they want to look up to. The Duggars, in fact, are NOT people to look up to. That is why I can’t get over the thousands who buy into their media hype, wouldn’t miss one of their TV shows or interviews. I admit I’ve watched some of their interviews (via web sites) and caught parts of their TV shows, but only because it’s the same mentality as someone not wanting to see a car wreck. It’s kind of hard NOT to stare at something so horrible and shocking. It is shocking for this family to continue to breed mindlessly. God gave us brains for a reason and we aren’t animals who procreate on impulse. Even then, there are periods of time where rabbits aren’t even fertile.

These people are getting TV shows and awards ONLY because they continue to have unprotected sex. Now tell me WHY they should be put up as examples of a Christian lifestyle?

Wonder what will happen if one or more of their kids finally get a taste for normal life outside the Duggar bubble and decide to leave the compound? I’m almost hoping for the day that some of those kids rebel. I also will not be surprised if Michelle starts having miscarriages. You think maybe then they’ll start to realize that enough is enough? No, probably unless GOD told them to stop, they will continue until menopause hits. Makes me ill to think of another 5-6 after this one. :0

I never intended for anyone to read having 18+ kids in the bible. We have moved out of the “populating the earth” phase and need to focus on not exploiting our dwindling resources. Personally I Jim Bob and his wife should take a break and stop throwing the hot dog down the hallway of a vagina on that woman.

  • Mitsy
    May 28, 2008 at 07:44

I agree, that 18+ kids is not what the Bible encourages people to do. I’m no Bible scholar, but I believe the Bible also talks about using common sense about your life decisions. That’s something the Duggar’s don’t seem to want to do.

Go back and look at the segment on the Today show where Michelle announces her pregnancy. Watch some of the kids’ faces and tell me that they were not totally shocked and unhappy that “they’ve done it again”. I can’t imagine the embarrassment those older kids must feel, but I’m sure they would never share that embarrassment with their parents. That would be “ungodly” now wouldn’t it? I tend to think the kids have more brains than the parents do.

In this economy I can’t afford to start a family because I’m busy paying for the Duggar’s kids.
